Should you eat salmon skin?

Salmon skin is usually considered safe to eat. The skin contains more of the same minerals and nutrients contained in salmon, which are very good for you and healthy.

How do you prepare salmon with skin?

This will bring the salmon up to temperature. Pat it dry with kitchen paper. Heat your frying pan on medium heat. Never on high heat, because the skin can burn quickly. Put a little oil in the pan. Then place the salmon on the skin side in the frying pan. When the salmon seems to be half done, turn it over carefully. Briefly fry it again until it is cooked to the desired degree.
Do not cook it too long, otherwise it may become dry!

Risks of eating salmon skin

Salmon skin is generally safe for people to eat. However, it is known that fish can be contaminated by pollutants in our air and water. During its lifetime, salmon can absorb chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) through its skin and into other fish it eats. PCBs are a known carcinogen and have been linked to birth defects.

(If you’re a pregnant or nursing woman, you may want to avoid salmon skin altogether to be on the safe side.) Methylmercury is also absorbed during the life of the salmon. These chemicals can be toxic to humans if consumed in large quantities. Pregnant women in particular experience the negative side effects of these toxins and may even pass them on to their unborn child. Methylmercury has also been linked to birth defects.

So it is very important that you buy good quality salmon without chemicals.

But remember: You can almost always eat the skin of the salmon, as long as you prepare it to your liking! It is healthy and makes the salmon taste even better.
