Where the wild is

Our story starts in the north of Norway, above the Arctic Circle. The icy temperatures, the vast landscape, the quality of the water... Altogether the perfect conditions for salmon to grow naturally.

This magical region is home to a few family businesses, all dedicated to getting out on the water everyday to lovingly farm the natural way. Is this salmon different from other farmed salmon? Undoubtedly! Let us tell you why.

Natural selection

VÅRLAKS uses a natural farming method, so the fish have the opportunity to thrive in an excellent environment and grow into strong, healthy fish.

In natural surroundings, salmon eggs need 6 weeks to grow into young salmons. Our farms allow the eggs this time to grow into a young fish. What’s more, our natural salmon has plenty of space in the open nature to move around in our sprawling basins.

What’s on the menu

You could eat what we dish up for our fish. Our feed contains no antibiotics, no hormones, no GMOs, no additives, no chemicals and no synthetic colourants. Rest assured: we only give our fish the best nutrition, so that you know for certain you’re eating the very best sustainably farmed salmon.

Here are some figures for you: We use 1 kilo of fish feed for 1 kilo of fish. Mother earth is pleased about that.

We love salmon

It is why we treat our fish with care and respect. We use lumpsuckers: natural lice deterrents, instead of chemical or mechanical delousing. Also, we do not use copper treatments: our diver regularly gets to work underwater to prevent growth on the nets.

The journey our responsibly farmed salmon undertakes is 100% traceable. After our sustainable salmon have reached harvest weight in the Norwegian fjords, they are caught, carefully packaged and sent on a little trip. To optimize freshness, our fish is transported to central Europe before the rigor mortis phase is over. Within 48 hours after being caught, the salmon is divided into the desired portions - in a modern factory and with utmost focus on quality and food safety.
